There is always something new to learn and as our volunteers hear questions about certain terms they will put information here to assist our visitors.

Baygall or Bay Head

A baygall is a thick, forested depression at the base of a sandy slope. Water seepage from higher elevations allows moisture to accumulate in the soil. When this occurs over a long time, a substrate called peat forms. The Arboretum baygalls do not yet have a peat layer.

Borrow Pit

A pit created to provide earth that can be used as fill at another site.

QR code

You may see these modern “bar codes” around the park. They can be used by some cell phones and mobile devices to obtain information about the park either using a standard QR app or the application available from Cynaria.
Here’s what google’s look like:

Xeric Hammock

The Live Oak and Rosemary Ridge Trails wind their way through xeric hammock. This habitat covers approximately 30 percent of the Arboretum and was likely much smaller a century ago when fire and fire-tolerant pine habitats, such as scrubby flatwoods and sandhills, were more prevalent in this area. Xeric Hammock only develops in areas that have been protected from fire for at least 30 years. As you walk along the trails through Xeric Hammock, you will find a thriving community of plants in the canopy, mid-story, and understory. This community grows in well-drained, sandy soils. Little water and nutrients are retained in the sandy soil, resulting an abundance of palmettos, low-growing oaks and drought-resistant shrubs. The canopy is dominated by stunted laurel (Quercus laurifolia) and live (Quercus virginiana) oaks and an occasional chapman’s oak (Quercus chapmanii). The mid- and understory layers are dominated by palmettos and shrubs in the blueberry family such as sparkleberry (Vaccinium arboretum), rusty lyonia (Lyonia ferruginea), and fetterbush (Lyonia lucida).

What is an Arboretum?

An arboretum is a place where trees and other plants are grown and studied. The word “arboretum” comes from the Latin word “arbor,” meaning “tree.”

The Jacksonville Arboretum & Gardens

The Jacksonville Arboretum & Gardens is a 120-acre property with an interesting history. From about 1944 to 1961, the Humphries Gold Mining Company operated strip mines in this area of Jacksonville. Despite its name, Humphries did not mine for gold here but for minerals to make titanium. These mining activities severely impacted soils and vegetation in parts of the Jacksonville Arboretum, but these areas are recovering. In the early 1970s as a condition to an EPA Grant for building the Arlington East treatment facility, the City of Jacksonville purchased the property as a passive recreation and open space buffer around the treatment plant. For the next 30 years, however, the property went unused and was sometimes abused by illegal dumping.

In 2004, a group of citizens began discussions with the City to lease the property for recreational use as an arboretum. The lease was worked out, and the Jacksonville Arboretum and Gardens officially opened to the public in November 2008. At the time the Arboretum opened, there was a paved parking area, the Lake Loop, Jones Creek and Ravine trails. All of the trails, benches, board walks, and picnic tables in the Arboretum were built by volunteers from the community.

Our Organization

Mission Statement

Cultivating a unique environment for recreation, education and inspiration.

Goals

Conservation: To provide stewardship of the Arboretum lands by protecting, sustaining, and enhancing biological diversity by means of large tracts of open-space. The Arboretum also provides leadership locally and beyond in conservation matters, such as the eradication of invasive species, water conservation, and the responsible use of chemicals.

Teaching: To provide an outdoor laboratory for use by college faculty and students in Botany, Zoology, Biology, Environmental Studies, and other departments. In both teaching and research the Arboretum is a unique and valuable academic resource and support facility.

Research: To support and conduct research in a broad range of subjects including ecology, field biology, conservation, and natural history. Arboretum research has and continues to emphasize useful long-term studies.

Collection: To maintain, develop, and interpret well-documented plant collections for teaching, research, and public education and enjoyment.

Public Education: To provide programs and publications about conservation, horticulture, gardening, botany, and natural history which work to enhance public understanding of the natural world and foster an appreciation of the Arboretum’s mission.

Recreation: To provide a place where people from the community may enjoy passive recreation and where they may come to learn, reflect, and renew themselves through contact with the natural world. By all the elements of the Arboretum’s mission, the Arboretum enhances the quality of life both for northeast Florida and the residents of the community.

Future Plans

In 2010, the Jacksonville Arboretum adopted a Resource Management Plan to guide its activities and management of the property.

Download your own copy of our Resource Management Plan (pdf) by clicking on the link.

Some of the amenities planned for the future include: Additional trails, trail stabilization, a restroom, irrigation and additional plantings near Lake Ray, one or more shelters, one or more decks over scenic overlooks, enhancement and stabilization of the sand pit area, and a future visitors center.

Our News

Arboretum critters appear for plein air event

JACKSONVILLE (April 2012)—The Arboretum’s wildlife joined the plein air festivities during the recent A Brush With Nature. A Barred owl posed for hours, to visitors’ delight, as his likeness was captured on canvas. An alligator kept one artist company at the marsh overlook, a few gopher tortoises strolled through the park and a pair of otters played in Jones Creek. In one dramatic event, a rat snake fell out of a tree after Mama squirrel bit it to defend her nest.

Held Mar. 29-31, 36 renowned regional artists painted in the Arboretum’s beautiful outdoor settings during event. Besides watching artists at work, visitors took guided nature walks, saw artist demonstrations and heard live music. Children engaged in their own “plein air” painting in the popular children’s art tent.

Although the event was rained out Saturday afternoon, A Brush With Nature still proved to be a successful fundraiser for the Jacksonville Arboretum through art sales onsite and the ticketed Gala Reception & Sale held Saturday evening. Half of all the proceeds went to the Arboretum.

Want to see the Jacksonville Jaguars play this season?

The Jacksonville Arboretum can get you the best prices in town! And you’ll be supporting the Arboretum with each ticket purchased!

Give and Go! is a partnership between The Non-Profit Center, the Jacksonville Jaguars and WeGive.org to offer the lowest Jaguars ticket price in town AND raise funds for local non-profit organizations. The Jacksonville Arboretum & Gardens (JAG) can earn $20 for each single game ticket you purchase through Give and Go. This will help us raise the necessary funds for our WeGive.org fundraising project – education and location signs for our new trails. If you want to learn more about our project, please go to www.WeGive.org.
