Arboretum critters appear for plein air event

JACKSONVILLE (April 2012)—The Arboretum’s wildlife joined the plein air festivities during the recent A Brush With Nature. A Barred owl posed for hours, to visitors’ delight, as his likeness was captured on canvas. An alligator kept one artist company at the marsh overlook, a few gopher tortoises strolled through the park and a pair of otters played in Jones Creek. In one dramatic event, a rat snake fell out of a tree after Mama squirrel bit it to defend her nest.

Held Mar. 29-31, 36 renowned regional artists painted in the Arboretum’s beautiful outdoor settings during event. Besides watching artists at work, visitors took guided nature walks, saw artist demonstrations and heard live music. Children engaged in their own “plein air” painting in the popular children’s art tent.

Although the event was rained out Saturday afternoon, A Brush With Nature still proved to be a successful fundraiser for the Jacksonville Arboretum through art sales onsite and the ticketed Gala Reception & Sale held Saturday evening. Half of all the proceeds went to the Arboretum.
