Signage will remind visitors to maintain ‘social distancing,’ with no large gatherings allowed
Jacksonville, Fla. (April 21, 2020) – After closing on March 16 in accordance with city, state and federal guidelines to slow and reduce the spread of the COVID-19 Virus, the Jacksonville Arboretum & Gardens (JAG) will reopen to the public at 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 22.
Signs are displayed to remind visitors to maintain social distancing of six feet (20 feet away from runners and joggers). In addition, no organized group activities of more than 10 people are permitted, including picnics or gatherings.
All restroom facilities are closed, along with the pavilion and picnic areas, until further notice. Trails have also been marked using paint to encourage one-way travel along the three miles of trails at the venue.
“In deciding to reopen, the board of directors wanted to take these precautions to ensure our visitors, along with our staff and volunteers, can enjoy this great outdoor venue safely to get exercise and enjoy nature,” said JAG Board Chairman Ron Whittington.
According to Executive Director Dana Doody, the staff wants to encourage everyone visiting to maintain a safe distance and not to gather in groups.
“The staff and volunteers will be monitoring operations each day, and we hope our guests will follow these rules so we can remain open,” she said.
Doody added that the nonprofit “did take a financial hit” during the five-week closure and encourages those visiting to make a donation to the organization “if they are able to do so” to help overcome the shortfall. Donations can be made at a donation box on site, or through the nonprofit’s website at www.jacksonvillearboretum.org.
JAG will resume its normal summer hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday – Sunday. No organized events of any type will be allowed through May 29.
