For me, nothing is more gratifying than painting from life. My paintings are not so much a record of a place or scene, but my emotional response to it. Trying to capture the relationships between light, shape and form within a scene in those fleeting moments are a challenge I love pursuing. Painting small studies on location give me the information I need to take back into the studio to complete larger works. It allows me to keep my original concepts intact while creating paintings that maintain the vitality and freshness of what originally attracted me to paint the scene in the first place.
